Fancy Band

Every year the Pep Band deems that a hockey match shall be "Fancy Band". Tonight was the night. We traded our usual RIT hockey jerseys for more formal attire while we cheered on the tigers as they played Army.

Study 3: Sign Intelligibility

As part of my research so far I have collected picture descriptions in American Sign Language (ASL) from hearing, deaf and hard of hearing students with a range of self-rated skills in using ASL. We will be examining this data to determine which features make students signing more or less intelligible and examine new methods of assessing students' sign intelligibility.

FreezeFest

FreezeFest is a staple in the RIT calendar. Unfortunately this year, nothing was frozen. This week has been gorgeous and sunny and the snow has completely thawed! The planned snowball fight on the Greek Lawn became a game of bumper ball, in which students stood inside large inflatable balls and charged at each other. Even without the snow, fun was had by all!

ASL Mapping

Monique Holt from the New York Deaf Theatre presented a power workshop on the topic of ASL Mapping today. This workshop focused on conceptualising different types of literal and metaphorical space in ASL and encouraged debate among the audience who consisted of students, staff, faculty, and interpreters.

Empire State Winter Games

The Empire State Winter Games are a multi-day sports event that take place in Lake Placid, NY. The Games will bring together athletes who compete in 31 winter sports from across New York state and beyond. In 2017 there were more than 2,100 athletes who participated. This was the final competition for the Genesee Synchronized Skating Team this season. We had a great skate, finishing first in our division.
